One of the earlier bodies of work, the Sustension sculptures are something Shaeffer continues to explore and revisit periodically.
Magnetic Sustension is defined as:
The suspension of an object using both the repelling and attractive properties of magnetism to create physical tension within the composition of a sculptural space.
