Confront/(A)Void
Confront/(A)Void (2007-08), began as an attempt to visually reference geological formations using satellite images and layers of hand-cut paper. After cutting layer upon layer of paper, Shaeffer began to see the process as an exercise in understanding the psychology of the Void. The same Voids that appeared in …Manifest as Tension are re-visited, this time characterized as sub-conscious spaces where traumatic events are concealed, ultimately emerging as psychological tension.
The same events that create this tension are also responsible for the many layered Voids formed deep within the psyche. Confront (A)Void explores these Voids in a manner that emulate their formation--the slow deposition of layer upon layer, Void create- Void fill. Although this may at first seem like a redundant exercise, closer investigation reveals an elegant solution to the conflicting nature of the problem: the creation of a physical Void to fill a psychological Void.
